The USA

I thought I should document some of the oddities and craziness I have noticed already here in the US. First of all, we have cable TV, the basic package, which has 94 channels! Not that we even use half of them. The Animal Planet channel gets a good workout, as does any channel showing Friends, Seinfeld, Family Guy or Scrubs (these shows seem to be on at least 1 channel at any given time.

So, I have had alot of time to check out what's on TV, being unemployed and all. The first thing I noticed is that there are sooo many ads on TV for pharmaceuticals. Seriously, there is a pill you can take for absolutely everything! and it's not just pills for adults, there are children's pills and even pills for your pets. Oh Wow! The latest ad that I find particularly amusing is one that tells us how there are so many toxins in the environment and these toxins build up in our bodies everyday. This is not good. So... someone, somewhere has devised a special pad that you can place on the soles of your feet when you go to sleep and they remove the toxins from your body! Imagine that?! They work on the principles of gravity, apparently. So, when you lie down at night, all the toxins will be drawn towards your feet, by the forces of gravity (I think I might need someone to explain gravity to me again because I thought it worked in a vertical direction. Anyway, when you wake up, you take off these pads and they are covered in filth from all the toxins that have been removed. How remarkable!

The second funny thing I noticed on TV last week was actually on the news. It was the second most important story of the day. It was about a new cosmetic procedure that allows women to wear high heels even after they've worn out any fatty tissue on the balls of their feet. It's quite a problem, really. So many women have worn out the balls of their feet from wearing heels everyday and are now walking on bone and so someone has developed this procedure where you can be injected with fat deposits on the balls of your feet so that you can forever wear high heels. As long as you keep getting your fat deposits, of course!

Another thing I find amazing is the way they prioritise their news stories on what are supposed to be the news programs. For example, this week there was a devastating cyclone in Burma / Myanmar in which approx. 15,000 people died. However, this was not the lead story on the nightly news - that was left open for Miley Cyrus aka Hannah Montana. Apparently, Miley posed for a Vanity Fair photo shoot wrapped in a sheet. Oh my goodness!! How news-worthy is that?! It's supposed to be shocking because she's 15 and acting sexy when she's supposed to be a role model for young girls. Well, that certainly was worth being the lead story of the day over 15,000 people losing their life, wasn't it?! Ridiculous.
